‘Seeing’ Radioactivity in a Cloud Chamber
This is super-cool. They place a piece of Uranium Oxide in a cloud chamber and you can actually see two kinds of radioactive ‘bullets’ just flying out of the sample:
- Alpha particles, which make shorter and chonkier streaks because they’re Helium nucleii which are much heavier than:
- Beta particles which make longer and thinner streaks as they’re light little electrons (or positrons)
