Used clothing, new fabric, cotton batting, and thread on fabric

The recumbent figure looking toward the horizon in this quilt is modeled after Andrew Wyeth’s iconic 1948 painting, Christina’s World. Artist Luke Haynes asked his friends to imitate poses found in famous American paintings and then translated these portraits into fabric. By incorporating these references to the art historical canon, Haynes blurs the distinction between fine art and craft. He creates further conversation between past and present through his materials by using recycled clothing in the background and new fabric for the body of the figure.
