Head of a Laborer

James Ormsbee Chapin

West Orange, NJ 1887–1975 Toronto, Canada

Head of a Laborer, 1940

Oil on board

Nine Workmen (to your left) was painted between 1942 and 1945 as indicated in the lower left corner of the painting, next to James Chapin's signature. This new work to join the Museum's Collection, a preparatory painting, indicates that the artist started planning Nine Workmen at least as early as 1940. A drawing study for Nine Workmen joined the Collection as well. Many of the men's faces in this painting appeared before and after in Chapin's other works; they were likely models or people known to him. As a viewer looking at Chapin's work today, it's exciting to see these familiar faces again and again.
