Cave Painting - Wolf, Circa 14,000 - 10,000 BCE

Natural Pigements on Rock

The earliest representation of the wolf is found in a cave at Fond de Gaume in southwestern France. The wolf is alone among bison, horses, mammoths, reindeer, bulls, goats, rhinoceri, bears, cats, humans and techtiforms (diagrams). These images reflect the hunting preoccupations of the prehistoric societies, although the location of the paintings suggest that these images fulfilled a ritualistic function as well. It is unclear exactly how the attitudes of prehistoric peoples toward the wolf differed from their perception of other animals.
